I had a dream that I was contacted by an old high school classmate whom I haven’t seen in nearly 30 years (in real life, we were initially good friends at school, having bonded over a shared love of Star Trek, but had a major falling-out after a couple of years and didn’t really keep in touch after our final exams.) He had produced a piece of Star Trek fanfiction, entirely hand-written on paper with crude hand-drawn illustrations (I don’t remember any details of the story’s plot or characters), and he wanted me to copy it out and redraw it for him, on the basis that he felt I had neater handwriting and was a better artist. I agreed to this and he came round to my house, where I did my best to carefully recreate the manuscript under his supervision.
Dreams about reconnecting with people from your past, especially those with whom you have unresolved issues, can carry significant meaning. Let's break down the elements of your dream to help understand what it may be reflecting about your inner thoughts and feelings.
Old Friend from High School: Seeing an old classmate whom you haven’t interacted with for a long time usually symbolizes unresolved past issues or lessons. The fact that you had a falling-out in real life suggests that this dream could be about reconciliation or coming to terms with aspects of yourself or your past.
Shared Interest in Star Trek: Star Trek, in this dream, represents a shared passion or a happy time in your life, capturing a sense of nostalgia and connection. It harks back to when things were simple, and you were united by common interests. This can also symbolize a desire to reconnect with parts of yourself that are innovative, imaginative, and adventurous.
Fanfiction and Crude Illustrations: The fanfiction itself is significant. Writing and drawing symbolize expression and creativity. The fact that it was crude suggests that there might be a raw or unrefined aspect of your past or personality that requires attention or refinement. It might also imply there’s something in your life that needs further development or a more polished approach.
Recreating the Manuscript: Your task to recreate the story and its illustrations suggests you may be trying to revise or "rewrite" parts of your own history. This could mean that you are reassessing past events and your friendships, perhaps altering how you view those experiences. The emphasis on neater writing and better artistry indicates a desire for self-improvement or transformation to present a better version of yourself to the world.
Supervision by the Classmate: His presence as a supervisor provides a sense of accountability or judgment. This could represent your inner critic or that you feel judged by past actions and desire validation or acceptance from others, possibly from this particular segment of your past.
Overall Interpretation: This dream might symbolize a need to reconcile with past conflicts or unfinished business, represented by your old classmate. It reflects a yearning to refine the crude or raw elements of your past (or personality) into something more polished and refined, suggesting internal growth. The collaborative effort in the dream could mean you are integrating various aspects of your past into your present self, attempting to revise or improve upon them. It encourages self-reflection about where you came from, what lessons you've learned, and how you can transform them into a better present and future.
Consider reflecting on how this dream aligns with your feelings about personal growth, creativity, and relationships. It may be beneficial to explore whether there are unresolved feelings or past connections that you wish to approach or rethink.
